Copenhagen International Theatre (KIT) invites professionals, students and other concerned humans to some serious walking, sensing and talking as part of the WAVES Xtra programme. Hand in hand with some key creators who took part in our current programmes – Walking Copenhagen 2020 and Walking Landscapes 2021, Metropolis Copenhagen 2021 and the Liselund Laboratorium on Møn – we propose a program which we hope will change your perspective and perhaps your practice.
The Act of Walking
First of all, the act of walking defines us as humans and has always connected us to the ground, to the past and to the future – literally and symbolically. An act of survival, an act of pilgrimage, an act of defiance, an act of exploration and an act of creation which has inspired many artists who have maintained that walking is an artistic practice.
Landscape as a defining physicality
Secondly, we look at the notion of the landscape as a defining physicality. The term cultural landscape is increasingly used to describe the heritage of human interaction with the landscape as a layered and changing reality. Landscapes are suddenly being understood as places of vision and conflict underlining the metashift we are experiencing. We take a look at the term landscape as a place of layered material and a sensorial universe.
New production and touring formats
Thirdly, we look at the need to work and create in other production and touring formats and to consider reducing our reliance on both infrastructure and capital, where much of what we create is tailored to a questionable market situation. We explore the aesthetic of a changing reality. How might we look at circular economy, sensorial ethics and minimalist aesthetics as principles for a new performance-based practice?
STRUCTURE OF THE DAY – THE ACT OF WALKING:
On arrival in Vordingborg there will be coffee. We begin with a short presentation that covers the cultural shift we are witnessing in this post pandemic state, in the context of a growing awareness of the so-called Anthropocene. How does this impact our position as artists? This will include some examples of radical artistic practice and also an introduction to the creative thinking of Nana Francisca Schottländer and Gry Worre Hallberg.
After lunch you will be asked to choose between a series of walks, each one curated and formed as an individual and social experience in and with a landscape.
Finally, we will gather to discuss some of your reactions and ideas of how to co-create a better world and how this may be related to both artistic language and formats.
